In the Dec. 8 issue of NJBIZ, Suzanne DiGeronimo, FAIA, outlined “Different Possibilities Through Real Estate Upgrades,” how businesses can capitalize on their assets to meet the economic challenges ahead: “If you own your space, upgrade, improve. If you’re renting, now is the time to buy.” In an economic downturn, bargains abound, though she recommends consulting design professionals to distinguish a “bargain from a money pit.”
FIT´s Alumni News
Fashion Institute of Technology’s alumni magazine, hue, profiled DiGeronimo President, Suzanne DiGeronimo, FAIA, (’67, summa cum laude, interior design) in its Summer 2008 issue. The article showcased DiGeronimo’s recent architectural conservation work on two award-winning projects: the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Brooklyn Battery Tunnel Ventilation Building.
Design Meets Practice
Louis DiGeronimo,AIA, Vice President of DiGeronimo Architects, presented a seminar on construction accountability to students at Essex County College, Newark, NJ, in Nov. 2008. The lecture explored real life issues that architects and engineers confront in the field when drawings are translated into buildings. Mr. DiGeronimo illustrated issues with case studies and discussed how to identify and avoid liability problems in construction.
Sustainable Design in the Community
Suzanne DiGeronimo, FAIA, President of DiGeronimo Architects, participated on a panel discussion at two Sustainable Design Workshops presented by DPC Associates, in Tenafly, NJ and on Long Island. The panelists, all leaders in the construction community, led discussions with the 250 attendees on constructability issues of green building, following a screening of “The Greening of Southie.” The documentary shows how developing a LEED Gold apartment building in a working class neighborhood educated the whole community about sustainability. The workshop qualified for AIA Continuing Education Credits.
Restoring Eden / How does your Garden Grow?
DiGeronimo’s Marketing Manager, Ellen Kuhn, AIA, spoke on a panel presenting successful sustainable projects as models for small institutions—schools, congregations, camps—to members of GreenFaith’s Fellowship Program. New Jersey’s interfaith coalition for the environment, GreenFaith, offers a fellowship program to train religious and environmental leaders. Ms Kuhn outlined the enviromental program she initiated, which led to projects in environmental education, green building, and conservation.
